How to use hashtags effectively on Social Media platforms

In today’s era, everything has a hashtag associated with it. If you are getting married, your hashtag will be more popular than your name. If you own a company, hashtags will drive more likes, shares, and views. This is a way to discover your target audience. Twitter was the first social media platform on which hashtags are widely used in the starting. But in the current time, hashtags are more important than captions on social media.

Finding the correct hashtags will surely be one of the best techniques to increase the engagement of the audience. Using appropriate hashtags will help your target audience to reach you in a minimum amount of time.

Hashtag! What is that?

A hashtag is a short keyword or phrase headed with a #(hash symbol). It helps your audience to find you. It also enhances the reach of your post/blog. The hashtag can’t have any symbol or space in it. The placement of hashtags depends on you. You can place it in the middle, starting, or in the ending. By adding the correct hashtags, people who even don’t follow you can see your posts.

Some points need to be taken care of while adding a hashtag:

1. You should not be using a lot of hashtags. Every word shouldn’t be a hashtag.
2. Try and keep the hashtags short and memorable. Like, #breakthebias was the hashtag for International Women’s Day 2022.
3. Make sure the hashtag is simple and understandable. Avoid using complex hashtags are not something people usually search for.
4. It is not necessary to add hashtags to every post of yours.
5. With hashtags, you can also discover your competitors. Search for the hashtag you are going to use and you will come to know what your competitors are doing.

Importance of hashtags:

1. Build Brand Awareness: One of the effective ways to promote your business and your brand is using branded hashtags. For example, Oreo had used the hashtag #OreoHorrorStories which did wonders for them.
2. Increase Follower Engagement: As already mentioned above, the correct hashtag will help you reach your target audience. In addition to making your post visible, it also helps in making you a part of the conversation going on the social media platform.
3. Showing support for some Social Cause: Using a hashtag that is a part of some social cause will always help you in connecting with people. For example, #IWD2022 was one of the hashtags which were used for International Women’s Day 2022.
4. Adding a concept to the Social Media post: You will not be able to write the full concept/idea of your post on social media. On almost all social media platforms, there is a limit to the number of words you can write. Hashtags can help you there to shorten your concept and make it more understandable.
5. Better visibility to your Target Audience: On social media platforms, people can also follow the hashtags. For example, if you are using the hashtag #food, everyone who has followed #food will start seeing your posts in their feed.
